Hiatus House relies on the support of volunteers for fundraising events, awareness activities and general shelter support such as wrapping gifts and organizing donations.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, fill out the “Volunteer Application” form on the tab below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do volunteers work directly with women or children staying at Hiatus House?

A. No. Volunteers are needed in many other supporting roles.

Q. Are hours guaranteed?

A. No. Most of the volunteer opportunities are in support of events that are staggered throughout the year, with a concentration from September through December.

Q. How will I be notified of a volunteer opportunity?

A. Our volunteer coordinator will e-mail you opportunities as they arise.

Q. What is the process for becoming a volunteer?

A. Please fill out the form on the next tab, or contact us at volunteer@hiatushouse.com to begin the sign-up process. We will connect you with our volunteer coordinator to help set you up. You will need to attend an information session and sign a confidentiality form before you will be offered a volunteer opportunity.

Another way to make a meaningful impact during this campaign is by supporting women’s safe spaces. These spaces, ranging from shelters and women-only sections in public establishments like eateries and gyms, to legal protections that ensure women's rights and autonomy serve a crucial role in society. However, there is often resistance when people first encounter the concept of women-only spaces. Many dismiss these spaces as unnecessary or unfair, failing to recognize their vital purpose.

The lack of understanding about these spaces often stems from not being directly affected by the harmful behaviors they aim to protect against. The reality is that women face daily challenges and risks that many people are unaware of. For example, nearly one-in-two women report experiencing harassment or sexual assault in the workplace over the course of their careers, according to Statistics Canada (CTVNews, 2024).

Women-only spaces do more than provide safety—they offer an opportunity for healing, growth, and empowerment. They allow women to reclaim their agency, focus on their ambitions, and build a brighter future. These spaces are not only essential for protection but also for nurturing personal development and fostering a sense of community and support.

By supporting women’s safe spaces, you are taking a stand for gender equality, respect, and empowerment. You are affirming that every woman deserves the opportunity to live freely, safely, and pursue her dreams without fear. Your support makes a difference in the lives of countless women.

As highlighted on day #8 of this campaign, Intimat

As highlighted on day #8 of this campaign, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is one of the leading forms of gender-based violence. In addition to the unimaginable pain and suffering that these women endure, they often face judgment and mistreatment from the public, as well as from friends and family. Instead of adding to their burden, it is crucial that we offer unwavering support and a listening ear when they need it most.

The slides above highlight common signs that a victim of IPV may be displaying. If you notice two or more of these signs, it's important to sit down with your loved one and have a compassionate conversation. The key here is to listen and offer support, without judgment. Avoid immediately suggesting involving law enforcement, as the abuser may react violently if they learn that the police are involved, which can limit the woman’s ability to leave the situation safely. Instead, focus on discussing options that the victim is willing to consider.

There are resources available, both worldwide and within our community, to support and assist women in these situations. Our priority must be to connect these women with the resources they need to stay safe.
